On My Own in Prague

Emily Myers is a student at Arizona State University and an ISA Featured Blogger. She is currently studying abroad with ISA in Prague, Czech Republic.

There are some incredible things you learn about yourself when you start to spend time alone. You may already spend a little time on your own at home, but it really becomes something more when you are abroad in your host country. I am not discounting the fact that you will make incredible and lasting friendships on your journey, but it is important to remember at the end of the day this is supposed to be an experience to help you grow. Getting to know a new place on your own is one of the best ways to push the limits of your comfort zone. So, put in your headphones and take a walk around the city or cuddle up in a cozy café with your favorite drink.

The 7 Step Guide to Ridin’ Solo

  1. Map it out. It will make you feel more comfortable and confident.
  2. In complete contradiction, do not forget how magical wandering can be once you have got a general idea of where you are.
Petrin Hill is a great place to wander, not to mention the gorgeous views.

3. Get out your camera. If you’re in a city anywhere near as beautiful as Prague, this is a must because there are little details you will only catch when you have time to stop and really look around by yourself.

4. Disconnect. Turning off your phone can be a really nice break and it allows you to maximize your alone time.

5. Eat. Restaurant situations might seem awkward or daunting on your own. I’ve found waiters actually tend to be even more friendly, and in Europe it is pretty common for them to sit some other people with you. (Which is a great chance to have some interesting conversations!)

7. Do whatever really interests younature, museums, a picnic. Take advantage of your complete freedom.
