It’s the Small Things that Matter

When you’re first arriving to a new place, you’re excited to see the big things right away. You want to go out on your own or with a group of friends and explore every part of the country, or even wanting to leave the country to see the other places nearby; the problem with this usually ends up being, money. We are college students and with that being said, most of us are on a budget, and wanting to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, New Zealand, etc. usually isn’t an option for most of us.

I’ve only been in Australia for a month now, but within that month my outlook on life has changed, because it really is the small things that matter. Keep in mind, ‘you’re not home anymore, you are in a new place, everything around you is fresh and new and super exciting;’ a simple walk down the street could lead to beautiful sights or an unexpected adventure.

Byron Bay. Walking down the streets of Byron Bay I came across this beautiful mural of a mermaid.

A simple look up at the sky can take your breath away, and it’s a good reminder of, “yes, I’m actually here right now,” so take it all in.

Be completely cliché and head to the local zoo and take a picture with the one animal you’ve been dying to see for most of your life.

Currmbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Finally meeting a kangaroo.

Why not be one with nature and go for a hike? Take in all the different sights and sounds, all while trying not to slip on the muddy path.

And of course take advantage  of the fact the beach is only 10 minutes away from you by bus! Enjoy the idea of not being stuck in the cold and soak up the sun, you are in the Gold Coast after all.

Don’t let the idea of being on a budget limit you while you’re abroad. There are still so many things you can do to have an experience of a life time, and don’t forget you have a whole playground right outside your door. Stay positive, be open minded, and step outside your door and explore what’s out there.

The world awaits…discover it.
