Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that presents itself to a handful of students around the world.  When the time comes to pick a destination, many factors can determine where one will choose to spend a semester or year away from home.  In my case, there were a few key reasons why I choose to study abroad in Glasgow, Scotland.

The first factor was the university I would be attending.  While I would not be taking classes pertaining to my major during my time abroad, I still wanted to attend a world-class university, and the University of Glasgow exceeds all expectations.  It is one of the top universities in the United Kingdom and ranks highly in the top universities around the world.  Being the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world as well as one of Scotland’s four ancient universities, the University of Glasgow has more than enough history to draw me to it. Plus the fact that the main building of campus gives off a rather similar air to Hogwarts was bonus points in my book.

Another big reason for choosing Scotland as my study abroad location was the people.  Since this study abroad would be my first true adventure away from home for an extended period, I wanted to find a place I knew would be more than welcoming.  The people of Scotland, especially Glasgow, are known for their hospitality.  Everyone I have met since arriving in Scotland has been kind, helpful, and dedicated to making my stay in their country the best.

The major reason I had, however, for choosing to study in Scotland was it’s immense beauty and relaxing atmosphere.  Despite the weather stereotype, I had incredible weather throughout my time in Scotland.  This allowed me to go out and visit all the amazing places I had only ever seen in movies or on television.  Those medias do real-life Scotland no justice in embodying the awe-inspiring scenery and locations.  Whether it was just a walk through the Botanical Gardens or visiting the highlands, I fell in love with the gorgeous views and truly relaxing atmosphere.  Looking back on my study abroad decision, I am beyond pleased that I chose to study in a country where it’s people and landscape are beyond compare.

The world awaits…discover it.
