There is a hidden gem at the Farmer’s Market in the city of Galway, Ireland that awaits you at the very end of the line of tents and vendors. You will smell the prized possession long before you see it, and by the time you finally do see the green sign above the little metal cart, you’ll realize you have been subconsciously salivating the entire walk up to the jolly, humming man. In your pocket your wallet will be doing a little dance when you see that an incredible, life-altering doughnut is only 80 cents.
There are a couple of steps you should take in order to fully enjoy and savor the heaven you will taste here in the heart of Galway.
Revel in the sight of the lovely, singing man before you. He is always in an incredible mood, even at 8 am on a Saturday when the market opens. He rolls each doughnut in sunshine and sparkles, so make sure to take the time to appreciate what you’re about to bite into.
Order the doughnut, and doNUT overthink it. There are three different flavor options to top off your doughnut with; trust your gut. Don’t worry; you’ll have many a Saturday morning to come back and try the others. Oh, and you can combine them! Personally, I recommend the plain sugar. I guarantee you cannot go wrong with that one.
Slowly take the first bite. Full disclosure, it’s a lot to take in. You will feel a thousand emotions at once and start to wonder why on earth these doughnuts don’t exist everywhere. After the first bite, the new bar for doughnuts has been set, and any other brand doughnut following the experience will be a disappointment in comparison.
Try to not consume the doughnut whole. Really make an effort to savor the sugary-delight, even though it will take copious amounts of self-control. If you do inhale the doughnut, remember that you can buy another one, or can easily get one the next Saturday. And maybe by then you’ll have learned your lesson. This is probably the most difficult step.
Look at the crumpled napkin in your hand and smile at the memory of what once sat in your palm. Sugar crystals are likely all over your hands, chin, and clothing, but they are just happy reminders of a pleasurable experience. Take a deep breath and appreciate the doughnut, the market, and the beautiful and lively city of Galway. Then come back next Saturday and repeat Steps 1-5.
