Taking My Perceptions to New Heights

Julia Heller is a student at the University of Pittsburgh and an ISA Featured Blogger. She is currently studying abroad with ISA in Lima, Peru.

There’s so much more out there beyond the stomach-turning alarm clock noises at 5 a.m., the slamming of car horns, the beads of sweat running down your face as you run to school or work. All important, but in the grand scheme of things are small stressors that deter you from seeing the bigger picture, the one that catches your eye and allows you to appreciate it all.

Casually overlooking the coast of Lima, Peru where my size 8.5 Sperry’s look the size of four cars.

Parapente in Spanish, paragliding in English, or “You’re going to give me a heart attack” as my mother told me, allowed me to see life from a bird’s point of view, from a higher altitude, somewhere I wouldn’t have done before. Whether it’s jumping off a cliff into what could have been the Pacific Ocean or merely ordering a different order at your favorite coffee shop, take that leap of faith that gets your heart racing, something different that’ll let you see a different perspective, a different view at a different height. So fly high, lift your legs up and let the wind take control (of course with a little help from your instructor). I’m in complete awe of everything Peru has offered me thus far.

This is the face of pure amazement as I took my first, legitimate, leap of faith off of a cliff. For future reference: keep mouth closed so you don’t end up choking on bugs.

The world awaits…discover it.
